Chatvia vs others

Chatvia vs Zendesk: no fee per resolution

Zendesk's AI agents cost about $1.50 to $2 for every chat they resolve, by public reports, and every support agent needs a seat as well. Chatvia is the free, self-hosted AI agent platform I built, and nothing in it is billed per resolution. I go through price, data, models, channels and tools, and I say where Zendesk still wins.

My short answer

Chatvia, if you want an agent you own: data on your server, any model, and costs that stay flat as chats grow.

Zendesk, if you run a big support team that needs a large ticketing system, and the per-resolution bill fits your budget.

What Zendesk is

Zendesk is a large, hosted help desk. It handles email, web, mobile, social and voice support, with tickets, a help center and AI agents. Everything runs on Zendesk's cloud.

You pay twice. Every support agent needs a seat, from about $19 a month, and the AI agents need the higher plans. Then the AI bills for each automated resolution, at a reported $1.50 to $2 each.

What Chatvia is

Chatvia is a free platform for AI chat agents that you install on your own server with one command. An agent answers from your files, your websites and your Q&A pairs. It works on your website, in Slack, in Teams, on WhatsApp and in more places.

You get the full source code. Without a key you get one workspace with unlimited agents, teams and replies. Every feature works except the API, voice, Live Chat, capabilities and forms, and four Enterprise security features.

A meter with no cap

The sum is simple. At the reported rates, 1,000 automated resolutions a month come to about $1,500 to $2,000, before seats. At 10,000, it is about $15,000 to $20,000 a month. Nothing caps that meter.

Chatvia's software is free. You pay your AI provider for what the model uses, at the provider's price, with nothing added on top. A typical answer from a fast model costs a fraction of a cent. Run an open-weight model on your own hardware and the AI cost can be zero.

There are no seats either. Invite the whole team and give each person the right access with roles and 41 permissions.

Agents, teams and replies have no limit, with or without a key. A Pro license key adds more workspaces, the API, capabilities and forms and hides the "Powered by Chatvia" line, for $199 a year. If you need IP rules, a security audit log and data retention, an Enterprise key adds those.

Where your data sits

Zendesk keeps your tickets, chats and help articles on its own servers. Many companies accept that. Others cannot: health care, finance, government, or any team with strict data rules.

Chatvia runs on a server you choose: your cloud account, your data center, or a machine in your office. Chats and documents stay there, unless you send them to an AI provider you picked.

The model

Zendesk picks the models behind its AI agents.

In Chatvia you choose any model: OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, or your own server with Ollama or vLLM. Each agent can use a different one, and you can switch at any time. When a better or cheaper model appears, you can use it the same day.

Channels

Zendesk is strong on email tickets, phone and social support, all inside one help desk.

Chatvia covers a chat widget, a hosted chat page, voice chats, Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram and a REST API. One agent works the same way in every place. It also works well inside your team's own tools, so the same agent can answer staff in Slack or Teams.

Tools and guardrails

Zendesk's AI acts through Zendesk actions and marketplace apps. Its guardrails are built in and set by Zendesk.

A Chatvia agent can use 24 ready-made connectors, such as GitHub, HubSpot, Salesforce and Notion, or any MCP server. For each tool you decide: it runs, it waits for a person's OK, or it never runs. Every call is logged with its input and its result.

The guardrails catch prompt injection, mask personal data like card numbers, keep the agent on topic, and stop abusive language. You set how strict they are, and a monitor mode shows what they would block before you let them block anything.

You can have both

Zendesk is one of Chatvia's ready-made connectors. If your team lives in Zendesk, a Chatvia agent can connect to your Zendesk account as a tool. The help desk stays. The AI answers move to a server you own, with no fee per resolution.

Handing over to a person

Both products do this. Zendesk does it inside a full help desk. In Chatvia, your team takes over a widget chat live from the dashboard.

When I would pick Zendesk

  • You run a big support team that lives in email tickets.
  • You need phone support and a help center in the same product.
  • You never want to run a server.
  • The per-resolution fee is small next to your support budget.

That describes a lot of large support teams, and for them Zendesk is a fine choice.

Verdict

Zendesk is a mature help desk, and its AI is priced like a toll on every chat it closes. Chatvia gives you the core of a support AI, an agent that answers from your knowledge and hands over to a person, without the toll. Your data stays yours, you pick the model, and the cost stays flat as the chats grow.
