Chatvia vs others

Chatvia vs Voiceflow: skip the sales call

Voiceflow is a design tool for chat and voice agents, and most of its plans now go through a sales process. Chatvia, the self-hosted platform I built, is free, has no credits, and you can install it this afternoon without talking to anyone. I want to look at that gap, and at the one place where Voiceflow is clearly ahead.

In short

Voiceflow is for a team that designs complex phone agents and is happy to buy through sales. I would pick Chatvia if you want an AI agent you can install today, with a price you can see, your data on your own server, and the main chat apps already built in.

What Voiceflow is

Voiceflow is a hosted platform for designing chat and voice agents. A team lays out a conversation step by step, calls APIs and functions along the way, and publishes to the web, to voice and to the phone. It runs on Voiceflow's cloud. A private cloud is only offered on the Enterprise plan.

Pricing has mostly moved to sales. The older self-serve plans began at about $60 a month. Use is counted in credits for messages and calls, plus the AI model behind them.

What Chatvia is

Chatvia is a free platform for AI chat agents that you install on your own server with one command. An agent answers from your files, your websites and your Q&A pairs, and it works on your website, in Slack, Teams, WhatsApp and more.

You get the full source code. There are no plans and no seats.

A sales call or a free install

With Voiceflow, the first step is often a talk with sales. Then there is a plan, and then credits as the agent sends messages and takes calls. Before you start, it is hard to say what it will cost.

With Chatvia the software is free, and you can install it today. You pay your AI provider for what the model uses, at the provider's price, with nothing added on top. A typical answer from a fast model costs a fraction of a cent. With an open-weight model on your own hardware, the AI cost can be zero.

There is no limit on agents, teams or replies, with or without a key. A Pro license key is $199 a year. It adds more workspaces, the API, capabilities and forms and hides the "Powered by Chatvia" line. That price is on the page, like everything else. Nobody should have to ask.

Your data

Voiceflow keeps your agents and your chats on its own cloud. A private cloud exists, but it needs the Enterprise plan.

Chatvia runs on a server you choose: your cloud account, your data center, or a machine in your office. That is true on day one, for every team, with no special plan. Chats and documents never leave that server unless you send them to an AI provider you picked.

Which model answers

Voiceflow gives you a list of hosted models.

Chatvia lets you choose any model: OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, or your own server with Ollama or vLLM. Each agent can use a different one, and you can switch at any time.

Channels, and where Voiceflow is ahead

The two products aim at different jobs, and here it shows.

Voiceflow covers the web, voice and the phone, plus an API. For other chat apps, you write your own code.

Chatvia has a chat widget, a hosted chat page, voice chats, Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram and a REST API, all built in. One agent behaves the same in every place, with the same knowledge, tools and rules.

On phone calls, Voiceflow is stronger. Full stop. Chatvia's voice chats are for visitors on a page, not phone lines. Everywhere people type, Chatvia is stronger.

One install, the whole set

Voiceflow is a design tool. Much of what sits around the agent comes from other tools or from your own work. Handing a chat to a person goes through other tools, and guardrails are something you build into your flow.

Chatvia ships all of it together:

  • Knowledge base. Files, websites and Q&A, with hybrid search, reranking and source citations.
  • Guardrails. Prompt injection, personal data, topics and abusive language, on from the start.
  • Tools. 24 connectors or any MCP server, with allow, ask or block for each tool, and every call logged.
  • Evaluations. Test questions scored by an AI judge, exact matches, patterns or tool calls.
  • Handoff. Your team takes over a widget chat live from the dashboard.
  • Leads and analytics. Forms in the chat, and every chat sorted by topic, mood and tone.

When Voiceflow wins

If your main channel is the phone and a team designs complex call flows, pick Voiceflow. The same if you want a hosted design tool and never want to run a server, or if a price agreed with sales is how your company likes to buy. None of those are bad reasons.

My verdict

Voiceflow is a design tool for teams that plan every step of a call. Chatvia is a finished AI agent for the places where people type: your website, Slack, Teams and the big chat apps. The knowledge base, guardrails, tools and handoff come in one install. You keep your data, you pick the model, and the price is free.
