Chatvia vs others

Chatvia vs Intercom: no meter on answers

Intercom charges about $0.99 every time Fin, its AI agent, resolves a chat, and that comes on top of a seat for each teammate. Chatvia is the free, self-hosted AI agent platform I built, and it has no fee per answer. I compare the two on price, data, models, channels and tools, and I say when I would still pick Intercom.

My short answer

Pick Chatvia if you want to own the agent: your data on your server, any model you like, and a bill that does not grow with every answer.

Pick Intercom if you want a complete help desk with email tickets, run by somebody else, and the per-answer fee is small next to your support budget. I mean that. It is a good product.

What Intercom is

Intercom is a hosted customer service suite: a shared inbox, a help center, email tickets, and Fin, its AI agent. All of it runs on Intercom's servers.

You pay twice. Every team member needs a seat, from about $29 a month. Then Fin costs about $0.99 for each chat it resolves.

What Chatvia is

Chatvia is a free platform for AI chat agents. You install it on your own server with one command. An agent answers from your files, your websites and your Q&A pairs, and it works on your website, in Slack, in Teams, on WhatsApp and in more places.

You get the full source code. Without a key you get one workspace with unlimited agents, teams and replies. Every feature works except the API, voice, Live Chat, capabilities and forms, and four Enterprise security features.

The meter

Let's start with the price, because everything else is a detail next to it.

With Intercom, the bill grows with your success. Fin resolves 1,000 chats a month? That is about $990 a month for Fin alone, before seats. 10,000 chats? About $9,900 a month. The better the agent works, the more you pay.

With Chatvia, the software is free. You pay your AI provider for what the model uses, at the provider's price, and nothing is added on top. A typical answer from a fast model costs a fraction of a cent. Run an open-weight model on your own hardware and the AI cost can be zero.

Chatvia has no limits on agents, teams or replies, with or without a key. A Pro license key costs $199 a year. It adds more workspaces, the API, capabilities and forms and hides the "Powered by Chatvia" line.

Where your data sits

Intercom keeps your chats, contacts and documents on its own servers. For many companies that is fine. For others it is a hard no: health care, finance, government, or any team with strict data rules.

Chatvia runs where you put it: your cloud account, your data center, or a machine in your office. Chats and documents stay there, unless you send them to an AI provider you picked.

The model

Intercom chooses the model behind Fin. You cannot switch it.

In Chatvia you choose any model: OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, or your own server with Ollama or vLLM. Each agent can run a different model, and you can switch at any time. A better or cheaper model comes out on Monday, you use it on Monday.

Channels

Intercom covers web, mobile, email, WhatsApp, SMS, social apps and phone.

Chatvia covers a chat widget, a hosted chat page, voice chats, Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram and a REST API. One agent, and it acts the same in every place.

The fair way to put it: Intercom is stronger on email tickets. Chatvia is stronger inside your team's own tools, like Slack and Teams.

Tools and guardrails

Fin takes actions through Intercom's own connectors.

A Chatvia agent can use 24 ready-made connectors, such as GitHub, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion and Zendesk, or any MCP server. For every tool you decide one of three things: it runs, it waits for a person's OK, or it never runs. Every call is logged with its input and its result.

Guardrails are on from the start. They catch prompt injection, mask personal data like card numbers, keep the agent on topic, and stop abusive language.

Handing over to a person

Both can do this. Intercom does it inside a full help desk. In Chatvia, your team takes over a chat in the website widget live from the dashboard.

When I would pick Intercom

  • You need email tickets, a help center and an inbox in one product.
  • You never want to run a server.
  • The per-answer fee is small next to your support budget.

If all three are true, Intercom is the sensible choice, and I would not argue with you.

Verdict

Intercom is a good product, and you pay for it on every single answer. Chatvia gives you the same core, an agent that answers from your knowledge and hands over to a person when it should, with no meter. You keep your data, you pick the model, and your costs stay flat while your chats grow.
